Workplace bullying

When an individual or group of employees are repeatedly mistreated at work and suffers physical or mental injury as a result, this is referred to as workplace bullying.

Overview

Examples of this include jeering at an employee, purposeful withholding of pertinent information to prevent an employee from carrying out his or her responsibilities adequately, segregating or excluding staff, delegating tasks that are impossible to complete, establishing arbitrary deadlines for the submission of work, targeted harassment and intimidation, and adjusting the work schedule in order to disrupt the workflow of a particular employee.

Over 90% of employees have either witnessed bullying in the workplace or have personally experienced it, according to the Workplace Bullying Institute.

Prior to growing up and landing my first real job after NYSC, I recall seeing the movie “the devil wears prada” some years ago and wondering how a boss could be so harsh to a subordinate. When my boss entered the room, I would sometimes find it difficult to breathe. He would question me, such as, “Tell me what you have done to deserve your 30,000 monthly pay?” At the time, I was his only employee. I acted as his assistant, secretary, administrative officer, marketer, and cleaner. Once, he had told me to clean his just rented two-bedroom apartment. I spent the day bringing water to his place, washing and scrubbing. Unknown to me, a lady who was a friend of his had gone to inspect the cleaning I did. It was most heart wrenching to hear her reprimand me for not washing the Windows to her satisfaction. As earlier stated, this was not part of my job description. The woman was insensitive and quite crass. She blurted out how ashamed I should be for achieving less than she had at her age. The name calling was so condescending and hurtful. I remember being told I was stupid, useless and never quite did anything satisfactorily. I hated my job. The most humiliating part was always being fired at the end of each month. I had to kneel, beg and sob bitterly for my job and salary. Note that my salary hardly ever came in full. After only four months of employment, I was eventually let go for the last time, and I left without looking back.
