Relationship Bullying

This form of bullying manifests itself in romantic partnerships. It happens when a person intentionally harms their spouse or damages an item belonging to them, controls them through intimidation and fear, or makes their spouse feel insecure in an effort to degrade and undermine them.

Overview

Physical violence appears to be a common type of relationship bullying. It occurs whenever an individual uses physical force to exert control over their spouse.

According to the United Nations’ study from 2021, domestic violence has affected 48% of women in Nigeria since the start of the COVID 19 pandemic. Additionally, the Domestic and Sexual Abuse Response Team (DSVRT) provided data showing that, in 2021 alone, they dealt with more than 2,584 occurrences of domestic violence.

Roselyn detested arguing with her husband since every argument led to her being beaten. Whenever she defied his wishes, the repercussions were invariably catastrophic. She was not permitted to see her parents unless he agreed to the visit. He placed a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her on one occasion. She feared for her life on that day as she thought he would finally end her life. She begged for her life, which he seemed determined to take.

She eventually fled with her only child and sought sanctuary in her parents’ home.

Queen Beatrice was detained on February 17, 2021, by the Ondo State Police Command, for reportedly murdering her husband, Emmanuel Ikujuni. According to reports, Beatrice and the deceased got into a fight after he held a mobile conversation with another woman in her presence. She reportedly hit the deceased’s head with a plank after the argument. Reports reveal that the victim fell to the ground after his wife struck him with a plank. His neighbours rushed him to the hospital, where it was determined that he had passed away.

Another well-known case of relationship bullying is that of Maryam Sander, who murdered her husband Bilyaminu Bello on November 2, 2017, at their residence in Wuse 2, Abuja. On the specified day, he (Bilyaminu and Maryam, his wife) had a heated quarrel about nude images of a lady discovered in his phone. According to insiders, she had repeatedly questioned him about the nature of his relationship with the lady in the picture. She subsequently proceeded to the kitchen to procure a knife which she had used to threaten him before ending his life with the same weapon.
